Testing the Hypothesis Pt. 2
Interviewed people of my home town in Rockledge, Fl to get the information needed for this assignment.
Who: The people of who live on the outskirts of big cities and don't need to deal with the traffic caused in the heart of the city, people who live in small cities where there isn't ever any traffic or congestion, people who don't drive cars but rather bike to the places they need to reach.
What: The need in in these areas is differed from those in the heart of Miami because the issue of traffic isn't as prominent. Although there may sometimes be traffic, it is generally lighter, and it is much more rare than it is in larger cities. So while traffic is still a bother, there isn't enough of a problem being caused for the opportunity of an express way to be successful.
Why: The reason that the expressway wouldn't work for the people outside of the boundary is because the issue being resolved isn't one that needs resolving in smaller cities. Not one person that I talked to would even consider paying to use an expressway. They just don't have the need for it.
Inside the Boundary
Who is in: People who drive in large cities.
What the need is: An expressway to bypass all of the congestion and accidents that slow them down.
Why the need exists: Because there is so much traffic in large cities. It is a cause for being late to functions, or at least a nuisance.
Outside the Boundary
Who is not: People who don't drive at all or that live in smaller cities.
What the need is not: They do not have the need for an expressway as there isn't nearly as much traffic or congestion in smaller towns, and the people who don't drive couldn't use it anyways.
Alternative explanation: Driving situations differ according on where you are driving, and the people in smaller cities have little need for such an extravagant solution to such a minor problem. So while they are inconvenienced at times from traffic, it is hardly enough to warrant an expressway.

Nice post again. I still agree that express lanes are great and the more the better. I understand that they are not needed in small cities or suburbs however to leave/come to these towns, you probably need to get on a major highway in order to reach them therefore I think it would benefit everyone. Sure, some drivers will benefit more than others but regardless I think all benefit from express lanes.

ReplyDeleteAlthough your respondents didn’t seem to see a need, the people working at Sunpass will confirm that thousands of people will pay tolls daily to avoid traffic—especially in places like Miami. Although it may not be as much of a need in small cities, express lanes could definitely be useful for driving to and from those small cities.

ReplyDeleteNice post. I totally agree with you express lanes won't work on small town for the reason you did mention. I think your market is only lager cities with heavy traffic and not small one. Overall you did a great job
